Hozugawa River Boat Ride: Two Hours Downstream to Arashiyama

One fare, one direction, no classes. What varies is the season and how many boats run.

What two hours on the river is actually like

The boats are long, low, open and wooden, seating around twenty passengers on the floor and on benches. Three boatmen work each one: one poling at the bow, one on the oar, one on the rudder at the stern, and they swap positions as the water changes. There is no engine.

The river alternates between long flat green stretches, where the boatmen narrate and point out rock formations, and short rapids where everyone gets a little wet and the boat picks up real speed. Herons stand on the rocks and ignore you. Near the bottom a small vendor boat pulls alongside selling grilled squid and beer, which sounds like a tourist gimmick and turns out to be the most popular ten minutes of the trip.

On 28 March 2023 a boat carrying 25 passengers and four boatmen capsized on the Hozugawa. Two boatmen, aged 51 and 40, died. The passengers were rescued by other boats. The cause was traced to the handling of the rudder at the stern.

Operations stopped for three and a half months. When they resumed in July 2023, the operator had changed the safety equipment and the boats themselves: automatically inflating life vests for everyone on board rather than the older equipment that had to be operated by the wearer, radios on every boat, and hull modifications intended to stop the helmsman going into the water.

We include this because the search results for this ride are full of it and because a two-hour trip on moving water deserves an honest paragraph rather than silence. The ride is run by a company that has worked this river for centuries and it carries a great many people a year without incident. Make the decision with the facts rather than without them.

Boats leave from the boarding point in Kameoka, a short walk from Kameoka station on the JR Sagano Line or a shuttle bus from Torokko Kameoka, where the scenic railway ends. That is the pairing almost everybody makes: the Sagano Romantic Train up the gorge for ¥880 and 25 minutes, then the boat back down for ¥4,100 and two hours.

Tickets are sold at the boarding office on the day, cards accepted, and boats depart when they fill rather than strictly to a timetable in the busy months. In autumn and on spring weekends the wait can run long, so arrive earlier than you think you need to. Reserved departures are available in advance, which is the safer route in November.

Seasons, weather and the kotatsu boats

The ride runs all year. From mid-December to early March the boats are fitted with kotatsu, the low heated tables with a quilt around them that Japanese homes use in winter, plus roof covers, and you go down the gorge warm while the hills around you are bare and snow-dusted. That is the version locals like most.

High water stops everything. After heavy rain, and during the June rainy season and September typhoons, services suspend without much notice and refunds follow. If the river looks brown and fast from Togetsukyo Bridge, ring before travelling out to Kameoka.

You get splashed. In the rapids the water comes over the bow and reaches the first few rows, and on a windy day it reaches further. The boats carry plastic covers that the crew pull up in rain or cold, which keeps the worst off, and nobody arrives in Arashiyama soaked. Sit toward the stern if staying dry matters, and put anything electronic in a bag rather than a lap.

Skip it if two hours seated on a low bench without a proper backrest is going to hurt, if you cannot get in and out of a low boat without help, or if you are travelling with a toddler who will not sit still. There is no getting off partway. Everyone else, including nervous swimmers, is fine: life vests are issued and worn for the whole trip.

Is it worth ¥4,100

It is the most expensive single thing in the Arashiyama district and the only one that lasts two hours, which is the right way to judge it. Per hour it costs less than the monkey park and buys scenery you cannot reach any other way, since the road does not follow the gorge.

The honest caveat is that it is slow, and slow is the point. Travellers who want to tick sights find it long. Travellers who have been walking Kyoto's temples for four days find it the best afternoon of the trip.
