What the ride is
The Sagano Scenic Railway runs on the old San-in main line, the track the JR trains abandoned when a newer, straighter tunnel route opened. What was left behind is a slow single track pinned to the side of the Hozugawa gorge, and an operator who put open-sided carriages on it and sold the view.
The trolley clatters along above the river, passes the rafts and the boats going the other way, and the guard narrates in Japanese with enough enthusiasm that you follow it regardless. In autumn the maples come down to the track on both sides. It is the least Kyoto-like thing in Kyoto, and it is the ride everybody remembers.
Fares, and how tickets are really sold
One flat fare covers any distance: ¥880 for adults, ¥440 for children. A child fare starts at elementary school age, 6 and over, and an infant on a lap travels free. Groups of fifteen or more pay ¥800 and ¥400.
Every seat is reserved. Online sales open at midnight one month before the boarding date, which is when the November departures disappear. Same-day tickets go on sale at the counters from about 8:35 at Torokko Saga, 8:50 at Torokko Arashiyama and 9:10 at Torokko Kameoka, sold first come first served, and Torokko Hozukyo has no counter at all. When reserved seats run out, a limited number of standing tickets go on sale, which is worth knowing on a spring Saturday when the alternative is not riding.

Car 5, The Rich, and whether to gamble on it
The fifth carriage has no windows, wooden benches and a transparent floor panel over the track. It cannot be booked as a group, it is the first thing to sell out, and it is the reason half the photographs of this railway exist.
The catch is weather. Umbrellas are banned on board, so a raincoat is the only cover, and there is no refund, no seat change and no swap to a later train if it rains on your booking. In July it is the coolest seat on the train. In a cold November drizzle it is a mistake. Book it if the forecast is settled and take a normal carriage if it is not.
The boat loop back down
The classic day rides the train up to Kameoka and floats back down. From Torokko Kameoka a shuttle bus runs to the Hozugawa boat pier, and the boat covers the 16 kilometres back to Arashiyama with three boatmen working poles and oars through the shallow sections. It takes around two hours and lands you at Togetsukyo Bridge, a few minutes from the bamboo grove.
It is a different budget from the train and worth checking before you commit the afternoon, since the boats suspend in high water. If two hours on the river is more than you want, the JR Sagano Line from Umahori station, a ten minute walk from Torokko Kameoka, gets you back to Saga-Arashiyama in about ten minutes.
Season, Wednesdays and the 2027 train
The line runs from 1 March to late December and does not operate in January or February. Wednesdays are the regular closure, with exceptions: a Wednesday that is a public holiday runs, and so do Wednesdays during the spring and summer holiday periods and through the mid-November to early December colour season. Is it worth it
For ¥880 and 25 minutes, this is the cheapest good thing in Arashiyama after the grove itself, which is free. The complaint you read most often is that the ride is short, and it is: twenty-five minutes of gorge, then a small station in a field with a shuttle bus and some souvenir stalls. Ride it as one leg of a loop, not as a destination, and the objection disappears.
Autumn is the reason most people book, and autumn is also when it sells out a month ahead and the carriages are full of raised phones. A weekday in late May gives you the same gorge at a third of the crowd, with the river high and green from the rains.
